Shelter Associates through its city-wide research on the slum rehabilitation and redevelopment have mapped and articulated a plan of action for slum redevelopment. The Bondre Nagar slum redevelopment project is a first-of-its-kind project in the city of Kolhapur; and the whole approach of city-wide research and planning is a replicable model across the state and geographies.
To multiply the impacts of Gulf for Good’s funding, we will curate a detailed communications strategy to amplify the work undertaken.
The following are the charity's current needs that we are working towards supporting.
Transforming the lives of the urban poor through:
Sanitation: SA facilitate access to sanitation in informal settlements by: (1) setting up a very robust spatial data platform to pinpoint families who lack access to basic sanitation, (2) facilitating the construction of individual toilets, (3) conducting workshops to increase awareness within the community of environmental issues, (4) providing a forum for sanitation issues to be discussed and (5) establishing solid waste collection systems.
Social Housing: The housing projects implemented by us are: (1) based on accurate data which has been spatially organised; (2) generated from a city-wide approach which considers housing as an integral part of the city along with areas of employment, healthcare, education, and convenience; and (3) implemented in partnership with beneficiary communities.
Research & Poverty Mapping: In India there is currently a lack of adequate data to guide urban planning; this lack of up-to-date information leads to ineffective planning policies. In response to this predicament, we create and maintain poverty maps of peri-urban areas which guide our needs-based interventions. We carry out research to facilitate better understanding of the needs of the urban poor, and design of effective solutions to meet those needs.
